Greetings in the Mighty Name of Our God!
Growing up in a little village in rural Northeast Ohio, I had the opportunity to learn how to trap. Now as controversial as that may seem to today, back then it was readily accepted and became a way to make some extra money. Now at first, when I was just a young teenager, I thought all you had to do was find the hole where the animal lived and place a trap in front of it. But then I discovered that doesn’t work very well. First, you don’t know what lives in the hole (catching a skunk is not much fun) and secondly, getting an animal to put his foot exactly where you want it takes great skill. The secret for being successful is luring the animal you purposely want to catch and then guiding him to step exactly where you want him to step.
Now the first part of this formula can be accomplished through lures. These are scents (odors) which attract the animal you’re wanting to catch. But then comes the tricky part. Even though you may be able to entice the animal to the location of your set, you still have to get him to put his paw precisely where you want him to. And one of the best ways to do this is by using guide sticks. Again, watch any dog or cat as they are walking; they will always avoid stepping on a stick. And why? It’s because they know it represents unsure footing. In other words, if it moves, it’s unstable.
Well guess what, this is exactly how the enemy of our soul operates. And the lures that he uses are the lusts and desires of our own flesh. It’s prestige, recognition, and power. As John wrote in his epistle, “It’s the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.” But then he guides us to the trigger of his trap by using the guide sticks of empty promises. Remember what he told Eve, “You won’t die, you’ll be as gods.”
Now the reason I’ve shared all this today is to remind you of what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 2:11 and I’m paraphrasing, “To keep Satan from getting an advantage of us: we cannot be ignorant of his devices.” Simply put, we must become trap-wise or kingdom minded.
May God bless you richly!
